Australia Day is the official national day of Australia, celebrated on January 26. It marks the 1788 landing of the First Fleet in Sydney Cove and the start of British settlement. For some Indigenous Australians, the day is also viewed as βInvasion Dayβ or a βDay of Mourningβ because of the impact of colonization. It is a time for both celebration and reflection on the countryβs long history. It was first celebrated as βAnniversary Dayβ in New South Wales as far back as 1818. It wasnβt until 1994 that it became a national public holiday in all states and territories. Itβs a day for citizenship ceremonies, community events, and recognizing contributions to the country.
