The American Diabetic Association (ADA) was founded by six physicians in 1940. Their mission was to make people aware of the different forms of diabetes. Diabetes is associated with many other various forms of illnesses. For this reason, people need to be aware of the ways to prevent, treat and resolve diabetes. In 1986 the ADA dubbed the 4th Tuesday in March as AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION ALERT Day in their words as a β€œwake up” call to this potentially life-threatening disorder and understanding your risk.

The fact is more than 84% of people aren’t even conscious they fall into the category of being a candidate for prediabetes. Since diabetes can cause serious adverse health problems and even lead to death it’s important to know if you fall into the group of people that are in the high-risk category. Overeating food that isn’t nutritious, obesity, and lack of exercise put you at a higher risk of getting diabetes and is also one of the top ways to help your body handle diabetes if you have it.

SIX Fun Facts you never knew about AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION ALERT Day

  1. Way back in 1889, two German researchers, Oskar Minkowski and Joseph von Mering found that when the pancreas gland was removed from dogs, the animals developed symptoms of diabetes. This led to the idea that the pancreas was the site where β€œpancreatic substances” (insulin) were produced.
  2. In 1910, Sir Edward Albert Sharpey-Shafer suggested that it was just ONE chemical that was missing from the pancreas of people with diabetes. He called this chemical insulin, which is the Latin insula meaning β€œisland”.
  3. A young surgeon in 1921 named Frederick Banting and his assistant Charles Best deduced how to remove the insulin from a dog’s pancreas. Of course, distrustful coworkers said it looked like β€œthick brown muck”. They kept another dog alive for 70 days with the stuff.
  4. Banting’s colleagues, JB Collip and John Macleod did the same thing but this time with cattle. And in 1922, a 14-year-old boy dying from diabetes in a Toronto hospital was injected for the first time. Within 24 hours his blood sugar levels returned to normal. Both Macleod & Banting’s teams received the Nobel Prize in Medicine the next year!
  5. Ayurvedic physicians around 1550 BC come up with the phrase β€œhoney urine” to diagnose diabetes if your urine tasted sweet. Unknown if the doctor or patient had to taste it.
  6. A Greek physician by the name of Demetrius of Apamea coined the term β€œdiabetes” around 100 BC.

How does EATING affect Diabetes?

  • When you eat sugars they break down into glucose for cell energy. When blood sugar gets flooded, chronic health complications start to appear. Equally important is losing weight, eating a balanced diet, and exercising; four components that help prevent, treat, and manage diabetes.

  • When type 1 diabetic people exercise they should eat a carbohydrate snack such as fruit, yogurt, or whole-grain carbohydrates. Their body doesn’t make insulin so this is important. The meals they consume affect their glucose. Knowing how to monitor insulin is crucial for maintaining a good health status day-to-day.

  • With type 1 diabetes, it’s important to get near-normal blood glucose daily. Pay attention to getting too many or too few carbohydrates; hyper or hypoglycemia can then occur. Having sweets is allowable even if you’re eating healthily but you need to count these carb foods. Having a balance of foods with monounsaturated fats and complex carbohydrates is beneficial as long as you don’t go under or over your carbohydrate allotment. Doing this can lower blood lipids and HDL as well as lower blood glucose and insulin which affects your all-day triglyceride levels.

What safety PRECAUTIONS should a Diabetic person take when EXERCISING?

  • When people begin a new exercise program, they oftentimes push too hard and put themselves at risk for injury. No pain, no gain is wrong here. Moderation is always the key to safe exercise – start slowly and gradually build up in intensity, frequency, and duration.
    • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, warm-up, stretch, take your time, drink plenty of water, cool down, and then rest.
    • Monitor glucose before engaging in exercise. You don’t want to exercise if your blood sugar is too low.
    • The injection site for insulin should not be involved in a prime mover (a muscle or group of muscles that primarily is in charge of a joint motion) with the exercise you’re doing.
    • Carry a tasty little morsel or eat a light carbohydrate snack before engaging in exercise to prevent blood sugar from dropping too low causing hypoglycemia.
    • Just like the number of carbohydrates you ingest should remain fairly constant on a day-to-day basis – so should the time you choose to exercise. If you exercise around noon then stick to that time frame for your exercise routine.
    • In the beginning, monitor insulin with your doctor during exercise or increase carbohydrates to accommodate your blood sugar needs.
    • Pay particular attention to RED FLAG Hypoglycemia symptoms – usually a symptom of overdoing the exercise. If they occur, contact 911 immediately. These signs include are excess fatigue, lightheadedness, dizziness, profuse perspiration, spots or floaters in front of your vision, confusion, shakiness, headaches, sudden rapid heart rate, and seizures.
    • It’s important to monitor for blisters that could become foot ulcers. If a foot ulcer is detected, notify your doctor promptly. When exercising, wear the appropriate polyester-blend socks and shoes with silica gel or air midsoles.
