DIGITAL LEARNING Day is observed on the last Thursday in February and is dedicated to promoting the use of digital technology in education. The day was first celebrated on February 1, 2012 and was first conceived by the Alliance for Excellent Education (All4Ed), a Washington, DC-based education policy and advocacy organization.
DIGITAL LEARNING Day emerged as a response to the growing recognition of the transformative potential of digital technology in education. The Alliance for Excellent Education, led by former Governor Bob Wise, played a pivotal role in launching this initiative.
All4Ed aimed to raise awareness about the benefits of digital learning and encourage educators to integrate technology into their teaching practices. With a focus on improving education outcomes and opportunities for all students, the Alliance saw digital learning as a powerful tool to achieve these goals.
The idea behind DIGITAL LEARNING Day was to create a national platform for showcasing innovative practices, sharing resources, and enabling collaboration among educators, policymakers, and stakeholders. By highlighting the benefits of digital learning, the Alliance sought to inspire educators to explore new instructional strategies, leverage digital tools, and adapt to the evolving needs of students in the 21st century.
The inaugural DLDay in 2012 was met with readiness from educators across the country. Schools and districts organized events such as technology showcases, digital literacy workshops, and virtual classroom visits to demonstrate how technology could enhance teaching and learning experiences. Additionally, All4Ed and its partners provided online resources, webinars, and professional development opportunities to support educators in integrating technology effectively into their classrooms.
DIGITAL LEARNING Day has now grown into a global movement, with participation from educators, schools, and organizations like Google worldwide. It has evolved to encompass a wide range of activities and initiatives, including discussions on digital equity, access to technology, and policies supporting digital learning initiatives. The day continues to serve as a catalyst for innovation and collaboration in education, driving efforts to ensure that all students have access to high-quality digital learning experiences that prepare them for success in an increasingly digital world.
Through DLDay, the Alliance for Excellent Education and its partners like Google have made significant strides in advancing the adoption of digital technology in education and promoting the importance of digital literacy and skills development for students of all ages. The initiative remains committed to its mission of empowering educators and students to harness the power of digital learning to achieve academic excellence and lifelong success.
