This holiday is observed on February 15. It commemorates the day in 1965 when the red and white maple leaf flag was first raised on Parliament Hill. Prime Minister Jean ChrΓ©tien officially instituted the day in 1996 to celebrate the flag as a symbol of national unity and identity. It marks the anniversary of the inauguration of the design that replaced the Canadian Red Ensign.
