MARYLAND Day is celebrated on the 25th Day in March in the state of Maryland, USA. It commemorates the landing of the first European settlers in the Province of Maryland, which took place on March 25, 1634.
In 1632, King Charles I of England granted a charter to Cecilius Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore, to establish a colony in the Chesapeake Bay area. His father, George Calvert, had originally planned the colony, but he died before the charter was granted.
Cecilius Calvert sent his younger brother Leonard Calvert to lead the expedition to Maryland, which included about 200 settlers on two ships, the Ark and the Dove. They set sail from the Isle of Wight in England on November 22, 1633, and arrived in the Chesapeake Bay area on February 24, 1634.
After exploring the area, the settlers landed on St. Clementโs Island on March 25, 1634, and held a Mass of Thanksgiving to mark the occasion. They then sailed up the Potomac River and established the settlement of St. Maryโs City, which became the capital of the Province of Maryland.
Maryland Day was first celebrated as a holiday in 1903, on the 269th anniversary of the landing of the settlers. It was established by the State Board of Education as a way to encourage Maryland schools to teach state history. In 1916, the Maryland General Assembly passed a law officially recognizing Maryland Day as a legal holiday.
Today, Maryland Day is celebrated with events and activities throughout the state, including historic reenactments, festivals, and educational programs. Many schools also use the day as an opportunity to teach students about Marylandโs history and heritage.
