This federal holiday is observed on the third Monday of January each year. It honors the life and legacy of Dr Martin Luther King Jr., the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement. The holiday commemorates his efforts to end racial segregation and his advocacy for equal rights through peaceful protest and civil disobedience. In 1994, Congress designated this day as a National Day of Service to encourage Americans to volunteer in their communities.
