National TACO Day, celebrated on the 1st Tuesday in October, honors one of the most beloved and adaptable foods in America. What began as scattered local celebrations and marketing efforts has evolved into a national observance that blends cultural pride, food heritage, and modern promotion
The modern version of National TACO Day in the U.S. is tied to October 4, a date that began gaining traction in the 2000s. In 2009, Del Taco issued a press release declaring October 4 โTime to Celebrate National Taco Day,โ helping that date enter broader awareness. Later, Taco Bell partnered and essentially did the same thing by shifting the observance so it always falls on the first Tuesday in October, aligning it with โTaco Tuesday.โ
Although the precise birth of National TACO Day is somewhat unclear, hereโs what weโve gathered so far regarding its origin story & history.
Some trace its roots to San Antonio, Texas, in the 1960s, where civic leader Roberto L Gomez promoted taco pride and recognition of Mexican cuisine. Early โTaco Weekโ or โTaco Monthโ events around Cinco de Mayo highlighted food and culture. In the 2000s, restaurants like Chuyโs used other dates such as June 12 before the October 4 version gained dominance. Because of these competing claims and marketing efforts, thereโs no single founder.
National TACO Day celebrates the popularity, creativity, and heritage of tacos. It gives restaurants, brands, and communities a shared excuse to spotlight Mexican and Mexican-American cuisine while promoting local businesses. The day has become both a cultural nod and a marketing opportunity that encourages people to gather, share, and enjoy tacos together.
October 4 became the popular date after Del Tacoโs 2009 campaign. However, because October 4 doesnโt always fall on a Tuesday, the alignment with โTaco Tuesdayโ was inconsistent. To fix that, Taco Bell moved it to the first Tuesday in October starting in 2024, giving the holiday a permanent spot that matches the weekly taco tradition loved by all.
National TACO Day is now part of the mainstream food calendar, recognized by major brands and small vendors alike. The move to the first Tuesday in October reinforces its link to โTaco Tuesdayโ and adds to its marketing strength. The day blends cultural celebration with commercial appeal, drawing attention to one of Americaโs most beloved foods while honoring its Mexican roots.
