πŸ• National BEAGLE Day 2025 – Apr 22

Beagle lovers unite to appreciate these cute & lovable doggy breeds.

πŸ• National BEAGLE Day ORIGIN & HISTORY

Sean Parkinson had this idea back in 2017 to push for a National BEAGLE Day and organized Beaglelandia in the UK. A final total of 1029 beagles procured a Guinness World Record for the Largest Dog Walk of a Single Breed on April 22, 2018. A year later Sean rallied support online for the National BEAGLE Day which celebrates these little sweethearts each year on the 22nd Day in April.

Beagles are adorable floppy-eared pooches that will melt your heart with their soulful puppy dog eyes. Perhaps the most popular beagle is Charlie Brown’s Snoopy, the beloved cartoon character from the 1950s. Beagles are small and very active. They require exercise and are known for being playful, enjoying socialization, and needing friends. Early on beagles have been used as companions in hunting.

My sister and her daughter have been taking care of their rescue beagle for many years now. Her name is Belle Belle. In fact, Kenzie Lou will be no doubt be studying to be a veterinarian in the near future. Beagles require grooming and TLC; check with your vet to know what’s the best way to care for your pet.

HISTORY of These Lovable Dogs

There isn’t much early recorded information about where beagles originated. In ancient Greece, dogs of similar beagle size were used for hunting in the 5th century BC. In the 8th century AD, we have documentation of the Flemish or St Huberts Hound which was the ancestor to the Talbot Bloodhound.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ The Beagles go to ENGLAND

There’s evidence that William the Conqueror took Talbot Hound dogs to England during his travels in the 11th century. These dogs were used for hunting but weren’t good runners. In order to increase the dog’s speed, Talbot Hounds were bred with greyhounds.

The earliest known beagles were called pocket beagles, typically only 8 to 9 inches tall. They were useful in hunting and chasing rabbits from thickets. These dogs could fit into the pant pockets of hunters. During the mid-18th century dogs of larger size were more useful for hunting and so the smaller beagle became extinct.

In the 18th century, two types of new dog breeds emerged – the Southern Hound and the North Country Beagle. These dogs were bred with larger dogs such as the Staghounds and this breed became the famous foxhound since they were used to hunt foxes.

In the 1840s the standard beagle was bred; they were the medium beagle, dwarf or lapdog beagle, fox beagle, and the rough-coated terrier. There was evidence in 1887 that only 18 packs of beagles existed in England. Beagle lovers came together across the Isle to preserve the beagle lineage. They formed the Beagle Club and the Association of Masters of Harriers and Beagles around 1890. What few beagle dogs remained were scooped up and later the number of beagle packs raised to 1902.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Beagles Land in the USA

General Richard Rowett from Carlinville, Illinois in the early 1870s brought Beagles to the United States from England. Rowett’s Beagles are the first beagle bloodline of other American Beagles. In 1885 the first Beagle entered into the AKC was named Blunder. Beagles gained popularity in American households in the 20th century, they were used for hunting and also for family pets and they still serve both purposes today.

In 1928 the Beagle started winning prizes at the Westminster Kennel Club shows in 1928 and eleven years after that a Beagle received the title of top-winning American-bred dog of the year. In 2008, the Beagle received the β€œBest in Show.” Beagles are very popular; they currently hold the number three spot in the American Kennel Club’sΒ  β€œAmerica’s 10 Most Popular Dog Breed List”. They consistently make it to that list year after year.
