Hanging in there? Slow down, take it slow, and learn the art of doing NOTHING. π
International SLOTH Day was created in 2010 by the Foundation AIUNAU, a Colombian-based wildlife conservation group. The foundation, which has worked for years to protect sloths and other animals, wanted to raise awareness about the slow-paced creatures and the environmental challenges they face. AIUNAU chose the 3rd Saturday in October as a day to highlight slothsβ importance to ecosystems and educate people about the conservation efforts needed to protect them from threats like habitat destruction, illegal pet trade, and deforestation.
The inspiration behind International Sloth Day stems from AIUNAUβs hands-on work in rescuing and rehabilitating sloths. They recognized that sloths, despite their iconic βlazyβ image, play a critical role in maintaining the health of tropical rainforests. The foundationβs goal was to shift public perception, moving away from seeing sloths merely as cute and sleepy animals and encouraging people to see them as vital creatures that need protection.
Since then, International Sloth Day has gained global recognition, with animal welfare organizations, zoos, and conservationists celebrating the day through educational programs, social media campaigns, and events focused on sloth preservation. Itβs become a day to not only admire the slothβs charming slow nature but also to reflect on the ongoing need to protect the species and their habitats.
Not sure how to LOVE the day? Weβve got a few interesting ideas to consider that may help get you started.
Here are some activities you can do on International SLOTH Day!
Check out a local zoo or wildlife sanctuary that cares for sloths. Learn more about their habitat and behaviors from experts.
Support groups that protect sloths and their habitats, like Foundation AIUNAU, or other wildlife organizations below.
Spend the day learning more about sloths by watching nature documentaries that feature them. David Attenborough has seen it all when it comes to sloths!
Whether itβs a fun childrenβs book or an article about sloth conservation, reading up is a great way to celebrate.
Take a page out of the slothβs book and spend the day relaxing, moving slowly, and taking time out for yourself.
