🌍 World CANCER Day ORIGIN & HISTORY

World CANCER Day began in 2000 at the World Cancer Summit Against Cancer in Paris, France. It was officially designated at the summit by Kōichirō Matsuura, the General Director of UNESCO at the time. Word CANCER Day is celebrated on the 4th Day in February and is an initiative of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to set aside a global uniting initiative to fight cancer.

GLOBAL Initiative for Cancer Awareness

This is a worldwide endeavor that helps provide an outreach center no matter who you are or where you live. Individuals can get help with treatment and care in the fight against cancer. The goal of the UICC is to save as many lives with treatment as possible against preventable deaths from cancer.

They seek to bring awareness, educate everyone, and establish a coalition for all governments to work together in action so that there’s a single unified voice against cancers which is one of the greatest challenges in our history.

Each person can play a part as a participant in the fight against cancer. Some events and activities happen all over the globe. The public has historically participated in public areas, hospitals, their jobs, places of worship, grocery stores, schools, and various other places throughout the community. You can bring action and awareness to fight this deadly disease.

PREVENTATIVE Measures

Make simple lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active, limiting alcohol consumption, avoiding tobacco use, and eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables. It’s estimated that around one-third of the most common cancers can be prevented. These preventive measures can significantly reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer and promote overall health and well-being.

There are new medical achievements in healthcare, prevention, and detection. Still, due to different factors, this day seeks to educate care as an equal opportunity for all. Certain individuals don’t have every chance to get the care they need.

Every year on World CANCER Day the UICC is seeking to close the gap between high, middle, and low-income countries as a factor that will result in fewer lives lost. Cancer care will continue for everyone until one day we can end cancer once and for all – God willing.

πŸŽ—οΈ Cancer FAQ

WHEN is World CANCER Day?

  • World CANCER Day is an annual celebration held on February 4th each year.

What is CANCER?

  • Cancer is a disease that happens when normal cells in your body mutate to uncontrolled, abnormal growth. This growth or lump is called a tumor. All cancers have tumors save one … leukemia which is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. If left untreated, these tumors can grow quickly and spread into the nearby unaffected tissues. The body’s nervous, circulatory, digestive, or lymphatic systems can be affected. The illness has been known to release certain hormones that also affect the body’s ability to function.

What types of TUMORS are there?

  • Tumors can be either benign (grow slowly and are not cancerous), pre-cancerous (abnormal cells that MAY become cancerous later on), or malignant (fast-growing and spreads to neighboring healthy tissue).

What are some DIFFERENT ways you can get CANCER?

There are FIVE main distinctions:

  • Carcinoma – Probably the most common where cells that help to protect or enclose organs and tissues are targeted. This includes breast, lung, colon, and prostate cancers.
  • Brain & Spinal Cord – The central nervous system is affected. Not all grow and spread; some are benign.
  • Lymphoma and Myeloma – Immune system is targeted along with the lymphatic system and hinders white blood cells’ ability to make antibodies.
  • Leukemia – White blood cells and bone marrow are targeted hampering the production of blood cells.
  • Sarcoma – Bone or soft tissue like muscle, fat, blood vessels, and nerves.

The ImpπŸ’œrtance of World CANCER Day

I know cancer used to be predominantly hard to talk about. In fact, it kinda still is. Many refer to it as the big “C” word. Both my mother and grandmother suffered from battling cancer. Gano had leukemia and from what I understood it was quite painful. Nanny had a rough go of it by having a nasty tumor spread like tentacles on her liver, small intestines, etc.

I didn’t even know it was cancer until many years later. That’s how powerful the word has become. She wouldn’t give up nor give in and is a testament that if there is more work to be done on this earth then group prayer and personal choice can sometimes intercede by the allowance of the Almighty.

  1. FIGHT The Good Fight

Millions of lives each year can be saved by implementing strategies for early detection, treatment, and prevention of cancers through global cancer agency resource strategies.

  2. OPEN Up

As I said, it can be a difficult topic to broach or discuss. If something needs to be addressed, make sure you don’t make the mistakes of others and be certain to consult with your doctor on everything that’s been affecting you lately. Whether it be a personal or cultural closed-off approach, opening up can prove useful in our fight.

  3. Here’s Your SIGN

Many times most cancerous lesions come with warning signs & symptoms if you’re paying attention. It’s not quite the silent killer lie it’s led us to believe. Go out and make awareness of your surroundings a priority and get regular checkups so that serenity is in your future.

We LOVE All Of You Survivors
