Celebrating the birthday of the educator who helped develop one of modern childhood’s milestones.

🚸 National KINDERGARTEN Day ORIGIN & HISTORY

National KINDERGARTEN Day is celebrated on the 21st Day in April.

Freidrich Wilhelm August Fröbel, the father of “Kindergarten” was born on April 21, 1782. He was the most influential educator of the 19th century. When he was nine months old his mother died. Her death possibly may have caused him to spend his early years growing up being neglected. My theory, although not specified in some of the readings of Frobel, is that his neglect as a youngster may have inspired his thoughts on the importance of positive child-rearing. A concerned uncle was aware of Freidrich and felt he was growing up without having proper care given to him. So his uncle sent him to school to be educated. There he developed an interest in plants, natural phenomena, math, and language. He felt he had a calling in the teaching profession. He developed friendships with Educators Anton Grunner for Frankfurt Germany and Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, a Swiss Educator. Both of these men advocated for Froebel’s theories on education.

In 1811, Frobels’ works were deterred by the Napoleonic Wars. Froebel opened a school in Griesheim in Thuringia in 1816. Friends of his developed an educational community. The school expanded into an Institution for Educators. Froebel became a prolific writer in the education of children and children’s literature such as Nursery Songs and Mothers Play. His greatest work with his theories is found in his “Education of Man” Froebel was recognized highly as an educator. The Swiss government recruited him to be the person that would educate other teachers. People also recognized him for his theories on childhood development. He opened a school in Blankenship Prussia which he called at first, The Child Nurture and Activity Center. Later he called the school kindergarten or garden of children. His ideas for the education of youngsters were highly influential and they actually paved a way for comprehensive educational programs and social reform.

The Prussian government outlawed these schools and felt it was unnecessary. Sadly, Froebel died in 1852 and it wasn’t until the ban on school was lifted in 1860. He never got a chance to see the profound impact that a kindergarten education would have. A disciple of the Baroness of (Marenholtz Buluw) italics was chiefly responsible for the propagation of Froebel’s ideas on the education of youth. Kindergarten first spread to England, France, and the Netherlands. Froebelian Ideologies moved to the United States. John Dewey adopted Froebel’s theories at the University of Chicago. Froebel’s theories are the reason why the education of children between the ages of four and six is implemented in the school system throughout North America and Europe.

The time children spend in Kindergarten is essential. The knowledge they gain helps youngsters to establish the proper development necessary for acquiring the proficiencies needed throughout their schooling. Children in kindergarten begin learning to socialize and engage in activities that promote emotional and physical well-being, they start to problem solve and develop study skills. The instructions taught in kindergarten are the stepping stones for leading to success as students proceed in the future in the time spent in school. Much appreciation to Fredrick Froebel for creating Kindergarten.
